Skateboarding Guide: Tricks, Land Routes and Collectibles
Skateboarding in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort: how tricks and balance work, the land routes worth learning, and how to collect without wiping out.

Skateboarding is the land vehicle of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. It covers the island's roads, plazas and resort paths, and it is the leisure sport that most often turns into a skill challenge because staying upright while collecting is genuinely difficult.
Controls
- Tilt to steer and balance.
- Stick for speed and camera.
- Motion flicks for tricks.
The balance model is the important part. The board responds to lean, and leaning too far in either direction ends the run. Small corrections keep you upright; big ones put you on the ground.
Tricks
Tricks are performed with flicks and hops, and they exist for two reasons: challenge routes score them, and they are the fastest way to cross a gap that a straight ride cannot.
The reliable approach is to learn three tricks well rather than ten badly: a basic hop, an aerial spin, and a grind. Those three cover almost every challenge route on the island.
Balance, in practice
The failure mode in skateboarding is overcorrection. A wobble starts, the player leans hard the other way, and the board goes down on the opposite side. The fix is smaller inputs applied earlier.
Two habits:
- Steer with the body, not the wrists. Wrist movements register as sharp tilts.
- Look ahead. Reaction times on a board are short, and the line you choose a second early is the one you can hold.
Routes worth learning
The island's land routes fall into three shapes:
- Coastal paths with long straight runs and few obstacles: good for speed and for spotting glints near the water.
- Resort plazas with tight turns and stairs: good for trick challenges.
- Hill roads with elevation changes: the fastest way to cross the island on land, and the easiest place to lose control.
Learn one route in each shape and you can reach most of the island without needing the plane.
Collecting on a board
Collectibles sit near the routes rather than on them, which means collecting usually involves leaving the path, stopping, and getting back on. Two practical notes:
- Slow down before the turn-off. A collectible spotted at speed is a missed collectible.
- Do not chase a glint down a slope. The board will outrun your ability to correct, and the fall costs more time than the item saves.
Skateboarding's challenges
The board's challenge routes are about line choice and trick timing rather than raw speed. They are the best place to practise aerials, because a failed trick costs a restart rather than a collection run.
For the collectibles themselves, see Spocco Photos and Hibiscus Flowers.
FAQ
How do you do tricks?
Motion flicks combined with hops. Three tricks cover most challenges.
Why do I keep falling?
Overcorrection. Use smaller tilts, applied earlier.
Can you collect while riding?
Yes, but most items sit off the main line, so slow down near them.
